Recycler's Story

Billy Meets Recycler.

One evening Billy was sitting by the window, playing on his computer, when his mum asked him to take the rubbish outside. It was dark when he stepped out of the door and he could see his breath in the cold night air. He hurried along to the bin and dropped the rubbish in.

"Ouch," said a muffled voice.

Billy jumped backwards in surprise.

Standing in front of him, shaking off a can of baked beans, an empty bottle and the leftovers from Billy's dinner, was a robot!

“Hello,” said the robot. “My name’s Recycler. I’m sorry if I scared you. Could you help me out of here, please?”

“I don’t mean to be rude,” Billy said as he helped Recycler out, “but what are you doing in my bin?”

“Oh, I had a bit of a bumpy landing,” Recycler explained and Billy suddenly noticed a rocket in his neighbour’s garden.

“My home is on planet Sludge.” Recycler continued. “But I like to visit Earth sometimes because it reminds me of how my planet used to look before it was covered in rubbish.”

“We threw away so much rubbish that we didn’t have room to bury it all. We didn’t look after our planet carefully and now the parks, beaches, streets and houses are covered with slimy, squelchy rubbish. The rivers look like green, slimy swamps and the sky is always dark. The air smells of old sweaty trainers and rotten eggs and even the rain is thick, brown and gloopy.”

“That’s terrible!” Billy gasped. “Will it be like that here if we keep throwing things away?”

Recycler looked at all the rubbish that was in Billy’s bin.

“Don’t you know that you don’t have to throw all of these things away?” Recycler asked. “Most of them could be recycled and made into something new!”

“Let’s sort it out to see how much didn’t need to be thrown away."

“So what would have happened to that rubbish if I had thrown it all in the bin?” Billy asked.

Recycler picked up the can that had landed on his head when he was in the bin.

“If you throw this old can in the rubbish bin,” he explained, “it will end up in a big hole in the ground called a landfill site. It won’t just disappear when it’s buried there, it will take
hundreds of years to rot away – what a waste!”

“Hundreds of years!” Billy gasped.

“But if you recycle it instead, it can be made into something new! It could become part of a train, a car, a fridge, a bike, or maybe a new can,” Recycler told Billy.

Billy thought recycling sounded exciting and wanted to know more.

“So this old paper could be recycled into...”

“ ...a new comic, a newspaper, writing paper, or even toilet roll!” Recycler continued.

Billy laughed and picked up an old plastic bottle. “What about this?” he asked.

“Well, if you can recycle your old plastic bottles, they could become part of a fleece jacket, just like the one you’re wearing.”

“Wow!” Billy gasped. He looked down at his fleece in amazement.

“The possibilities are endless,” Recycler smiled. “All you need to do is to recycle as much as you can and help your family to recycle at home.”

“I have to go now,” Recycler said, as he climbed into his rocket. “But remember, you can make a big difference.”

Recycler gave Billy a chart so that Billy could see how much his family could recycle and his family could see just how well they were doing!

Recycler waved goodbye and Billy watched as the rocket disappeared into the night sky. Then Billy ran into his kitchen with the chart, ready to carry on the mission.
